Huge crowds gathered outside the memorial for Anne Kirkbride today as her on-screen granddaughter paid tribute to the 'caring, lovable and funny' Coronation Street star.
At a packed service held at Manchester Cathedral, young actress Elle Mulvaney said it was 'a privilege' to call herself a friend of Kirkbride - who played Deirdre Barlow in the ITV soap for 43 years.
Anne, who died of cancer in January 2015, was one of the show's best-known performers and was loved by millions for her portrayal of husky-voiced Deirdre, famed for many years for her oversized spectacles.

The memorial service, attended by up to 600 people including members of the public, heard that all Kirkbride 'ever wanted to do was make people happy'.
To co-stars, she was regarded as one of the most popular actors to grace the Weatherfield cobbles after recording her first episode in November 1972.
She appeared in more than 3,300 episodes before taking a short break from the show and therefore appearing for the last time in October 2014.
Anne's husband of 23 years Dave Beckett helped the Coronation Street production team to produce today's poignant service and was involved in every aspect of the celebration including the choice of music and readings.
Her close friend, Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald, and her on-screen granddaughter Elle Mulvaney (Amy Barlow) gave affectionate tributes, as did her brother, John, the ITV1 show's executive producer Kieran Roberts and crew members.

The show's crew also wrote a moving tribute, saying Kirkbride made work 'feel like home'.
Crew members Paul Sparrow, Stephen Polack and Ciaron Hatzar added: 'We'd like to share a common and yet very often under-appreciated saying that Annie used on a daily basis. After greeting or leaving you with a massive Annie hug, and seriously that was one hell of a bear hug, Annie would say with great sincerity "I luuuuv youuuuu".'
Speaking on ITV's Lorraine recently, Anne's close friend Beverley Callard admitted she still misses Anne every day, on and off set.
'Oh, gosh,' she said. 'I miss everything about her. People used to call us the work sisters because we were just always together.
'Even in private life as well we both used to go to Spain together with our husbands and I truly miss her every single day.'
The 58-year-old star, who plays Liz McDonald in the ITV soap, filmed her first scene in the home of Anne's character Deirdre Barlow last week for the first time since her death.
She confessed that she found it much more difficult than she was expecting, explaining: 'We're beginning to sort of talk about Deirdre and my husband said to me, 'How will you feel about this?'
'And I said 'I'll be fine because we're not talking about Annie the friend, we're talking about Deirdre', but suddenly I walked into the Barlow's and I was so taken over with emotion and it was really, really difficult to do and I've not found that before.'

Yesterday, Anne's long-term on-screen husband William Roache paid tribute to the late star while speaking outside Manchester Cathedral.
He said: 'It's very, very strange because we're actually filming the funeral of Deirdre and I had a scene as Ken where I'm given Deirdre's glasses but of course Annie wore them for 30 years so you certainly don't need any motivation for the acting. We're always on the verge (of tears).
'It is a family and doing the funeral that we're doing of Deirdre next week, Annie will be there, we're just feeling her there the whole time…
'I know I have never heard a single bad word or criticism about Annie, you couldn't. I used to call her a love bomb because she exploded with love so she was a love bomb. She liked that.'
Roache also reflected on Anne's incredible sense of humour and said that laughter will be a big part of her memorial service.
He said: 'There was always a laugh waiting from Annie, whatever we were doing.
'The more serious it was, the more likely there was going to be a laugh and tomorrow at her memorial service there'll be laughter.'
