Girls urged to learn from mentors

*Parents, teachers asked to develop potential through support

Ofisa Mkuu wa Uhusiano wa Kampuni ya Vodacom Tanzania, Georgia Mutagahywa (wa pili kutoka kushoto) akimkabidhi chetu cha uhitimu mmoja wa wahitimu wa Kidato cha Sita wa Shule ya Sekondari ya Wasichana ya Weruweru wakati wa mahafali ya shule hiyo yaliyofanyika mjini Moshi, Kilimanjaro mwishoni mwa wiki. Ofisa huyo aliwakilisha wafanyakazi wa Vodacom kupitia Vodacom Foundation ikiwa ni sehemu ya mchango wao katika kusaidia wasichana katika elimu ambapo kampuni hiyo pia ilitoa msaada wa mashine ya kutoa nakala na kuchapisha nyaraka kwa shule hiyo. Wengine ni Wajumbe wa Bodi ya Shule.

Ofisa huyo aliwakilisha wafanyakazi wa Vodacom kupitia Vodacom Foundation ikiwa ni sehemu ya mchango wao katika kusaidia wasichana katika elimu ambapo kampuni hiyo pia ilitoa msaada wa mashine ya kutoa nakala na kuchapisha nyaraka kwa shule hiyo.

GIRLS from Weruweru Secondary School are urged to seek strong and successful female mentors who will guide them in their individual futures as they pursue higher education after completing A-Level. This was said by Georgia Mutagahywa, Vodacom Tanzania’s Chief Officer: Corporate Affairs in an inspirational keynote address during the school’s 2015 Form Six Graduation Ceremony.

In support of the girl child, Vodacom Foundation has donated a multipurpose (4-n1) photocopy machine, a donation made by Vodacom Foundation on behalf of Vodacom staff which now enables the school to make copies, print, scan and fax documents.

The support is one of the Foundation’s many initiatives that empower the girl child. The lack of a reliable machine meant a lot of resources lost in the trips made into town to access these services. Vodacom was honored by the school to grace this year’s graduation ceremony.

In her welcome address during the ceremony, Weruweru Girls’ Secondary School’s Head Mistress Rosalia Tarimo thanked Vodacom Foundation for this donation.

“We are very happy that we do not have to go into town to access the key services provided by this state-of-the-art machine. We would like to urge others to follow the example of Vodacom Foundation which truly continues to empower the girl child everywhere,” she said.

The journey of the girl child is encumbered with challenges but with proper guidance girls will succeed however girls are urged to believe in themselves and their dreams and dare to seek mentorship and guidance from those who have successfully travelled the same road.

Vodacom Tanzania’s Corporate Affairs & Communications Chief Officer Georgia Mutagahywa also said that Vodacom will continue to assist the school in resolving other challenges through its alumni. The school also faces challenges with internet access which the company has committed to resolving.

“The support we are giving to Weruweru and other institutions is always because of our strong belief that if empowered, a girl child will succeed. We believe in the girls’ potential and play our role in giving them a chance at quality education by removing as many roadblocks from their path as we possibly can and giving them tools to help them progress in their education,” she added.

Vodacom Foundation is Vodacom’s autonomous, philanthropic branch that focuses its community initiatives in education, health and financial inclusion. 

In 2014 the Foundation – in partnership with T-Marc – launched a program called Msichana Kwanza which aims at giving every girl child a chance at education by providing them with reusable sanitary pads. Since launch of the program pilot in Mtwara, attendance of classes by girls has improved. Before this program, girls would miss classes during their menstruation.
