Millions across the UK fell silent in tribute to those lost in war, joining the crowds who stood in a moment of contemplation as Big Ben struck 11am.
During the two-minute silence, only the distant sounds of traffic and the rustling of leaves could be heard. Police said that Whitehall was at capacity.
The start and end of the silence was marked with the firing of a round by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, using a 13-pounder First World War gun.
In cold but bright weather, the royals and dignitaries then laid their wreaths at the Cenotaph.

Earlier today, the Prince of Wales met some of India's last surviving Second World War veterans as he paid his respects to the country's war dead.
Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall honoured the fallen when they joined the congregation of a Mumbai church for an annual remembrance service.
Charles and Camilla took their seats at the head of the pews in St John the Evangelist Church - better known as the Afghan Church as it commemorates those who fought in the Afghan campaign of the mid-19th century.
Among those in the congregation was Brigadier Furdoon Mehta, 91, the first Indian Army aviator, and Madhukar Dongre, 92, the last surviving recipient of the Burma Star living in India who was a craftsman with the Indian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
