Landing gear of 9/11 jet found in 3ft gap at NYC mosque

Chilling legacy of U.S. terror

In this Friday, April 26, 2013, photo provided by the New York City Police Department, police investigate the space between a mosque and another building in New York where authorities believe a piece of landing gear belonging to one of the airliners that crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 was found.

THE landing gear from one of the jets flown into the Twin Towers has been found nearby where a mosque is planned.

The part was wedged between two buildings.
NYPD yesterday said the rusting piece still had its Boeing ID number visible.
The 5ft by 3ft part was found by surveyors inspecting the site of the planned Islamic community centre.

If authenticated, it would mean the landing gear was part of one of the jets hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists and flown into the World Trade Center in 2001.
The spot where the part was found is around three blocks from Ground Zero — where nearly 3,000 died.

Police will now decide whether to search the area for human remains.
The site has previously been the source of controversy as opponents protested that a Muslim centre near Ground Zero was disrespectful.
Last night Adam Leitman Bailey, attorney for the site’s owner, claimed the landing gear find was a set-up.
He said: “It was absolutely planted and I’m happy to go on the record saying so.
