Both Hoare and Matthews are pictured in the wedding photograph, which was taken after the 2013 ceremony, as is Becky.
The picture shows Hoare, dressed in the same grey suit as the groom, with Hoare and Becky in blue bridesmaids dresses.
In today's hearing, which lasted just one minute, unshaven Matthews spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth as he stood in the dock, dressed in a navy blue T-shirt.
He was remanded in custody and told him he would appear before the city's Crown Court via video link tomorrow, District Judge Lynne Matthews said.
Matthews, whose home address is Cotton Mill Lane, Bristol, showed no emotion throughout the hearing.
'As we all know, this case will have to go to the Crown Court,' the judge told Matthews.
'I cannot entertain any application for bail this morning and thus I will remand you in custody until tomorrow.'
No details of the case were given as Matthews stood handcuffed to a female dock officer before being led away.
According to the charge sheet, Matthews is charged with the 'murder of a person aged one year or older, namely between February 19 and March 3, murdered Rebecca Watts'.
Members of Becky's immediate family did not attend the short session.

His girlfriend, Shauna Hoare, 21, has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and minutes later appeared before magistrates in a separate hearing at the same packed courtroom.
She wore a dark coloured short-sleeved T shirt and had shoulder-length brown hair, which appeared unwashed.
Like Matthews, she was flanked in the dock by two dock officers, and remained emotionless throughout.
The charge states that Hoare 'did a series of acts which had the tendency to pervert the course of public justice in that you hindered the police investigation to assist Nathan Matthews and intended for him to avoid detection for the murder of Rebecca Watts'.

Becky, described as 'wonderful' by her family, vanished from her home in Crown Hill, Bristol, at 11.15am on February 19.
Avon and Somerset Police launched a huge search operation - involving six police teams each day - after she was reported missing the following afternoon.
On Monday night, detectives received information that Becky's body had been 'cut up' and they attended a house in Barton Court, Barton Hill, Bristol.
Body parts were discovered at the address, which continues to be combed by forensics teams. A private ambulance was seen leaving the property on Tuesday afternoon.
Bouquets, teddies and cards have been left at the family home where Becky went missing, and at the site where body parts were found.
Members of Becky's family visited her home yesterday, where they too left flowers and read messages of remembrance and support from members of the public.

'It was the most undignified end to a beautiful life, full of promise,' Becky's uncle Sam Galsworthy told ITV News last night.
'As her family it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But we know it is there and the support from family, friends and the nation, will help us find that light.
'She will live on in the hearts of all of us. We will reclaim Rebeca’s dignity. And eventually, as a community, we will lay her to rest with the utmost respect and love.'
Her uncle Joe added: 'It is vital that the memory of Becky lives on through everyone - family, friends and the community.
'We've all been brought together under the same umbrella, so to speak, through this whole case, and just the same as the public, we will pay our tributes and we'll shed our tears.
'We'll do it as a unit and as a family, because that is what we are.
'Words can't express what the family is going through right now.
'She has brought everyone together, and without even knowing it.
'That is a blessing and a positive in itself.'
The five people arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender following the grim discovery are four men, aged 29, 29, 23 and 23, and one woman, also aged 23.
Matthews was identified as the teenager's stepbrother - the son of her father Darren's wife Anjie - by family members.
