Police are hunting a man after a one-year-old boy died and a one-year-old girl - thought to be his twin sister - was left fighting for her life following an alleged hammer attack.
Detectives have now launched a manhunt for Bidhya Sagar Das, 33, following the harrowing incident in Finsbury Park, north London, just after 11pm yesterday.
The children were rushed to an east London hospital, but the boy passed away just before 1am this morning.
Detectives said Das was at the flat shortly before the children were found, but left before emergency services were called.
He has not been seen since and police are searching for him.
Das, who lived at the address, is understood to be the children's father, according to locals.
According to neighbours, a distraught woman ran outside in the early hours screaming 'My kids, my kids'.
The girl remains in hospital in a critical condition.
A murder investigation has been launched, led by Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams of the Homicide and Major Crime Command.
One neighbour said the children were twins who lived on the top floor with their Romanian mother and Indian father - who worked as a night receptionist at the nearby Pembury Hotel for seven years, but apparently quit his job two days ago.

A woman living opposite the building, who gave her name as Gui Gui, said she heard a woman shouting late last night and opened the window to offer help.
'I was watching TV,' she said. 'I heard someone was shouting. She kept on shouting. I do not know what she was shouting.
'I opened the window and I asked her 'Can I help you, can I call the police for you?'
'She said, 'My kids'.'
The neighbour said she later saw two young children being carried out of the building, with one being held very close to a member of the emergency services. Police are going door to door along the street as the investigation into the tragedy continues

A police car was parked outside the white three-storey building where the children are believed to have been injured while officers have been visiting and searching properties along the street.
Mihai Menea, 29, who lives on the second floor of the building, said the children were twins who lived on the top floor with their Romanian mother and Indian father, he said.
The father worked at the nearby Pembury Hotel as a receptionist, where Mr Menea also works, until a few days ago, he said.
Mr Menea described the mood inside the property as 'tense', adding: 'There's police coming and going all the time.'
