Iron Lady louts ... one partygoer sets fire to a picture of Thatcher
UGLY skirmishes erupted in UK cities last night as warped revellers celebrated the death of Baroness Margaret Thatcher at sickening parties.
It is now feared that plans are underway for more bashes this weekend which could spark further violence.
Six cops were injured in Bristol - one of whom was taken to hospital - when a clash broke out at a party of 200 people in the Easton area of the city.
Meanwhile, in Brixton - the scene of fierce riots in 1981 - around 150 people gathered.
Anti-capitalist yobs in Bristol threw bottles and cans at officers and set bins alight, resulting in one arrest for violent disorder.
While in Brixton men climbed on the roof of a building to hang a banner emblazoned with the words: "The witch is dead".
The advert for the street party read: “Let’s see the evil Tory off in style. May she never ever RIP.”
Details of the event were posted on the anarchist website Bristol Indymedia which lists “10 reasons to hate Thatcher”.
The list includes accusations the Iron Lady caused mass unemployment for the working class and made the gap between rich and poor greater.
Chief Inspector Mark Jackson said: “Around 200 people had gathered in Bristol to have a street party and refused police requests to peacefully disperse.”
A crowd of 300 people also gathered in Glasgow’s George Square, where in 1989 protests at the introduction of the infamous poll tax took place.
Some wore party hats and launched streamers into the air, while a bottle of champagne was opened with a toast to the demise of Britain’s first woman Prime Minister.
The mood in Brixton was more sinister with revellers taking to the streets wearing balaclavas to celebrate.
“Maggie Thatcher, milk snatcher” was not forgotten as women drank pints of milk in commemoration of Thatcher’s famous abolition of free school milk for kids.
Some scaled the nearby Ritzy Cinema to rearrange the lettering advertising films to read “Margaret Thatcher’s dead”.
People elsewhere carried banners, with one saying “Rejoice, Thatcher is dead.”
They also opened champagne and cheered, shouting: “Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, dead, dead, dead.”
The funeral is due to be held at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday next week which the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will attend.
Billy Elliot crowd vote on Maggie death showtune
BILLY Elliot audience members at the West End production were asked to vote on whether a song celebrating Margaret Thatcher’s death should be performed yesterday.
The second act of the musical, which is set during the miners’ strike of 1984-5, begins with the song Merry Christmas Maggie Thatcher.
The lyrics refer to celebrating the death of the former Prime Minister – echoing many songs written during the 1980s by Morrisey and Elvis Costello among others.
Billy Elliot insider said: “It was taken seriously and debated and finally decided that it would be best to put it to a democratic vote to the audience”.
Only three audience members voted against the song being performed in the light of Baroness Thatcher’s death.
